The Dieppe Raid, (also known as The Battle of Dieppe or Operation Jubilee) was an attack at a port in Dieppe, France that was occupied by the Germans.

The battle took place on August 19th, 1942 as a part of World War II. Through the duration of this event it is best described as a complete and utter catastrophe. There was no real accomplishment and nearl 60% of 5,000 who made it back to land were killed, captured or severely injured.

The purpose that this battle had was to try to seize and keep hold of a major port for a short amount of time to see whether they could gain information from pridons and also to see how the Germans would respond. They also hoped to lure the Lufwaffe into an attack so that they could please the Canadian Commanders.

Operation Rutter was also planned that would send several Canadian forces to atatck Dieppe beach, but due to the poor weather conditions the operation was called off.

After many failed arguments to cancel another operation, Operation Jubilee was commenced asmore soliders were brought in.

Dieppe was very weakly protected as there were not enough good quality soliders and there main defense consisted off machime guns, mortars and artillery.

As the battle wagef on Canadians were forced to retreat and surrender. Snior Canadian officer, Brigadier William Southam  had brought his copy of the battle plan with him and as he tried to dispose of it, the Germans retrieved it. Hitler ordered the Canadians soldiers to be shackled.

The reason why the Canadiansost this battle was because they tried a frontal assault on a defended coastal port. This however is a very unwise decision.
